The 506-word treatise by Zhu Yongchun (1617-1688) was originally meant to be the author's instructions to his own descendants. As it embodies basic principles of the Confucianist ethic, it has been widely accepted and propagated in the three hundred years since it was written. Many sentences from the treatise have become maxims much repeated and learnt that have guided generations of Chinese in their conduct at home, at the workplace, and in society.

Throughout Chinese history, there have been many teachings on regulating self and the family. Yet it is Maxims by Zhu Zi that has been chosen for inclusion in the Chinese Almanac, a book familiar to the traditional Chinese household. Since its writing, it has been read and applied by many Chinese who find in it a practical formula for success in personal, family and social life.

In The Chinese Code of Success, you will find that many of the teachings are Confucianist in outlook ¡ª Zhu Zi has expressed lucidly the relationship between the individual, the family and society. This book will prove to be most relevant to today¡¯s materialistic society, where many individuals are using all means, sometimes unethical ones, to attain their goals for fame, power and wealth. Readers can discover for themselves how despite technological advancements, certain basic human values are always relevant for personal effectiveness.

In this book, Chinese cartoonist Fu Chunjiang has exemplified the maxims through lucid and vivid illustrations, making it easy for the reader to relate them to his own experiences and thus apply the code of success in his daily life.
